Description

Halophila ovalis is a versatile seagrass species with oval-shaped leaves borne in pairs. It is one of the most widespread seagrass species globally and adapts to various depth ranges.

Morphology

Oval to elliptic leaves 1–4 cm long and 0.5–2 cm wide, paired on a short petiole arising from horizontal rhizomes.

Habitat

Highly adaptable — found from intertidal zones to depths of 30+ m. Grows on sandy, muddy, and mixed substrates.

Distribution

One of the most widely distributed seagrasses worldwide.

Ecological Role

Highly palatable to dugongs and sea turtles. Important food source across depth gradients.
