Species Information
Description
The largest seagrass species in the Philippines, Enhalus acoroides is easily recognized by its long ribbon-like leaves. It is commonly found in mixed seagrass meadows around Suyac Island.
Morphology
Very long strap-like leaves 1–2 cm wide and up to 150 cm long. Thick fibrous rhizomes. Separate male and female flowers.
Habitat
Shallow intertidal and subtidal sandy to muddy bottoms, often in sheltered areas.
Distribution
Indo-Pacific, common throughout Philippine waters.
Ecological Role
Provides habitat structure for diverse marine life. Leaves used as fish trap material by local fishermen. Important carbon sink.
